12V Make and Break Relays
A 12 Volts DC make-and-break relay is a type of electronic switch used in power lines that run motors and lighting on automotive vehicles. Our range covers most styles of vehicle electric relays including versions with sealed resistors and diodes. They are commonly found in; cars, vans, HGVs, forklift trucks, marine watercraft, plant equipment and agricultural machinery running on 12Vdc. There are various build variations to the make and break relay, including double and suppressed versions with diodes and resistors.
The main function of a make-and-break relay is to establish or break an electrical connection in a power line. Typically, this relay typically has pins designated as 30 and 87, which are used for the power line connections. When the internal coil of the relay is energized, usually through coil pins 85 and 86, the switch is "made," allowing the flow of current through the power line.
In most cases, a make-and-break relay is designed as Normally Open (NO), meaning that the switch is open when the coil is not energized. When the coil is energized, the switch closes, creating a connection in the power line. This type of relay is commonly used to switch a positive line in automotive applications.
