12V Changeover Relays
A 12 Volts DC changeover relay, also known as a switch-over relay, is a crucial component in electrical systems. They are commonly found in; cars, vans, HGVs, forklift trucks, marine watercraft, plant equipment and agricultural machinery running on 12Vdc. The primary function of a changeover relay is to switch the circuit from one position to another when the internal coil is energized. This switch-over function occurs in the power line and is typically designated by pins 30 for "line in" and 87/87a for the "line switch". The coil of the relay is typically designated by pins 85 and 86. There are various build variations to the changeover relay, including latching and suppressed versions incorporating diodes and resistors.
One of the most common uses of a 12V changeover relay is in automotive lighting systems. For instance, it can be used to switch the positive line from the dipped beam position to the high beam position. This allows for easy control of the headlights without the need for manual switching. The relay acts as a bridge between different positions, ensuring a smooth transition between them.
